What is Minoxidil?

Minoxidil is an FDA-approved drug that promotes future hair loss and possible hair growth. It is the brand name for the topical application Minoxidil. By applying Minoxidil to areas where people experience hair loss, they may experience hair growth over time.

This topical application can be applied directly to the scalp and offers excellent results that can be seen with continued use over the course of 4 months. It works best in people who are under 40 years of age and experiencing hair loss.

How Does it Work?

Minoxidil targets the blood vessels in the scalp and opens them up. As a vasodilator, it helps the vessels more efficiently transport nutrients and blood to the follicles, thereby promoting new hair growth. Minoxidil is safe to use but alcohol, which is an ingredient, could be an irritant. It is available in liquid and foam form.

What to Expect When Using Minoxidil

Minoxidil may result in minor side effects like sun sensitivity, dry scalp, and itching in some people. Those experiencing sun sensitivity should take steps to avoid over-exposure.

Minoxidil works for both men and women and is effective for male and female pattern baldness. If your hair is thinning on the top and the crown of the head, regular application will stimulate and promote hair growth. While using Minoxidil, be careful not to get it in your eyes. If it does enter your eyes, rinse them out well with cool water to reduce irritation.

How to Use Minoxidil for Hair Loss

Make sure the scalp area is dry prior to applying Minoxidil. For the topical solution, you may use 20 drops directly on the target area, or about 1 milliliter of the solution. For foam, turn the can upside down to put foam on your hand, then massage the foam onto the scalp. Rinse your hand thoroughly to remove the product.

Dry the solution completely to prevent transfer or staining on clothing, pillows, or bed linens. Do not use a hair dryer to dry the solution, as it makes it less effective. Applying on irritated skin or sunburnt scalp can cause side effects and thus should be avoided.

It is important that the Minoxidil solution is applied evenly. Do not use it in other parts of the body unless directed. Using it more frequently or applying more than the recommended amount may lead to side effects.

Expected Long-Term Results

Clinical studies have proven that Minoxidil is very effective in hair regrowth. It is a safe-to-use product that does not require extensive surgical techniques or downtime. Though it is an effective product, there are a few things to note.

It works mostly for people with hereditary hair loss. It may not help in restoring the same volume of hair, but there may be a noticeable improvement in overall volume. Once you start using Minoxidil, you will have to keep using it to maintain results. It is also best to apply it twice daily.
